There is relatively little home based Internet marketing information about Google Trends that actually shows marketers how it can help them improve their marketing efforts.

The fact is many Internet marketers either do not use or are not aware of how Google Trends can benefit them.

This easily digestible tidbit of home based Internet marketing information about Google Trends will explain why you should use it as part of your arsenal of Internet marketing tools.

Google Trends is an easy way for Internet marketers to learn how often topics in their individual market niches have been searched for by Google over a period of time.

The marketing tool identifies which geographic regions people have searched for topics the most and how often their areas of interest have appeared worldwide in Google News stories.

The information that Google Trends provides is updated daily and although it may contain some minor sampling inaccuracies, it provides users an insight into trends that can give them an edge over their competition.

Google Trends works by analyzing a portion of Google’s web searches.

When you type in a query it computes how many searches have been made for whatever terms you enter and compares that number to the total number of searches that were done on Google over a period of time.

The results of your query is given in the form of by Search Volume Index graph.


Directly underneath that graph is a News reference volume graph that shows users the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories.

When a spike in the volume of news stories for a search term is detected by Google Trends, it is labeled in the graph along with the headline of a randomly selected Google News story that was written near the time of the spike.

Links to the selected news stories are listed to the right of the graphs, along with the dates and source of the publication.

Directly below the News reference volume and Search Volume index graphs are displays for Regions, Cities and Languages.


This identifies which group of people queried the first search term that you entered into Google Trends.

  • Google Trends allows marketers to use commas to compare up to five multiple search terms.
  • For multi-word search terms like dress shoes or hiking boots, use parentheses around the term.

For instance, an Internet marketer who might want to compare different types of footwear could enter this query for (dress shoes), sneakers, boots in Google Trends.

  • By separating the search terms with a vertical bar, Google Trends will show you how many searches contained either of the terms.

(dress shoes) | sneakers | boots

  • By using the minus sign, you can exclude terms from your search.

For example, the search query sneakers-walking will show how many searches contained the term sneakers, but not walking.

Google Trends by default will show all searches that contain the terms you entered in random order.

  • If you want your results in the order that you entered them into the search engine, just place the terms in quotation marks.

Internet marketers can easily fine tune their search results by changing the region or the time frame used for the trend they are interested in.

For example, by default All regions and All years will be provided in your search results unless you modify the area or time frame you have an interest in.

The home based Internet marketing information about Google Trends can be used in a variety of ways by marketers to isolate and target existing markets or get the “jump” on potentially profitable markets worldwide.
