Whether we like it or not, we must acknowledge the existence of Search Engine Optimization so called, Black Hat techniques in the world of Internet marketing.

It’s hard to take, when you see a competitor performing horribly, who manages to outrank your website in Google’s search engine results by using black hat techniques.

The good news is that many of the so called black hat search engine optimization strategies, can be used ethically as well.

Here are some ethical black hat search engine optimization techniques you need to know about if you intend to hold on to your ranking.

When moving to a new domain, redirect outdated web pages to the newer versions of your homepage.  These 301 redirects are considered to be ethically satisfactory.

  • Using Throw Away Domains

You can create search engine optimized mini sites for short term use by using the currently popular keywords. When the craze or trend diminishes, simply abandon the domain.  Some typical examples  could be  Haitiearthquake.com, tigerwoodssexpose.com, halebop.com, or mjautopsy.com.  Throw away political domains are also regularly used by candidates during the campaign seasons.

  • Another regularly used ethical black hat search engine optimization technique you need to know about is Cloaking.

You can hide heavy Flash animations from Google, and just display the search engine optimized text only version.

  • Using Automatically Generated Keyword Pages

If you have enough content (many use private label rights content), you can create automatically generated web pages from each Google search query.  Many shopping search engines will create pages from a Google search query and assign a corresponding product to match each query.

  • Keyword Stuffing

Do what every major social media site does; keyword stuff and allow your users to add several tags via UGC tagging.  Folksonomy as it is called, is closely related to tagging, and is a classification scheme that uses a crowd of people, rather than experts to parse content.

  • Blog Spamming

Don’t get caught spamming; get yourself spammed instead!

Create a WordPress blog without Akismet spam protection and begin writing a few posts about any extremely profitable keyword as your main topic. Allow spammers to comment spam or add posts using TDO Mini Forms to your blog.  Then parse the comments for the keyword and outgoing links.  Publish the comments that contain the keyword and remove all outgoing links. What you’ve got is pure user generated content!

  • Hidden Affiliate Links

Hiding affiliate links is good for usability and is probably more ethical than displaying them. You have to admit, using product.com/ref?id=4880-8285 is much more objectionable than using product.com as your affiliate link.

In addition, people copying your advertisement might break the TOS.  Ethically, all you have to do is disclose the affiliate.  You can strip away the irritating ‘ref’ identification, and still provide full disclosure, by using ads on Twitter or other such sites.

  • Link Farms

If you are a full time blogger or have someone writing for you, you can create a legitimate blog network of flagship blogs on your own.  Managing four or five high quality blogs, along with a Hub Page or Squidoo Lens by yourself, can generate a ton of traffic.

  • Using Multiple Subdomains

Using multiple subdomains for one domain can be ethical.  WordPress.com and blogspot.com both create multiple subdomains by UGC, and in this way can rank several times for a search query.

  • Automated Twitter Tweets

Nothing is wrong with Twitter automation, so long as you don’t overdo it. As long as the Twitter account has a real person posting to it and tweeting “manually”; automatically tweeting RSS feeds from your blog, repeating your tweets, and even Tweeting other blogs is perfectly OK.

Most of the ethical black hat search engine optimization techniques you need to know about will help your website stay on top of Google’s search engine results page.
