Online press releases may be the ultimate link building strategy for small home based internet businesses.

Mainstream media coverage can be enormously beneficial in building inbound links, and bringing new visitors to your website.

Since most home based internet businesses are tight on cash, here are some DIY tips for creating online press releases, that will help you get the much needed publicity you are craving.

When creating your own online press releases…

  • Make sure that your article content is newsworthy.

Although it sounds difficult, hundreds of stories are published weekly in the mainstream media about small businesses such as yours.

It’s a good idea to find these online press releases, and discover why the journalist wrote the article about the small business.  When you have an understanding of what prompted the writer, you can create a similar story around your business to use as a template.

  • Make sure your online press releases are targeted to a specific group of journalists and that it is well written.

A good press release should have the following characteristics:

  • A keyword loaded headline that specifically describes the story
  • A well written, keyword rich, summary paragraph
  • Several quotes from other individuals or yourself written in the third person
  • A keyword loaded closing paragraph
  • Your contact details for followup
  • A link to your website for more detailed information about the story
  • Make sure your online press release is published in a timely fashion.

Try to time your news story to coincide with an event of some significance if possible.
Coordination is the secret to releasing a successful online press release.

If you strategize your timing and follow a clear plan, your story is likely to meet with much greater success.

Remember to release your online press release on a Thursday, or Friday.  Weekend releases usually get more coverage.

  • Try to contact journalists that write about your business.

Make yourself available to journalists that write about your niche market.

You can do this by historical research of outstanding press releases, and noting who wrote the article.

You can also purchase contact lists of journalists who cover your industry.  These are available online and are relatively inexpensive.

You can find out who is writing about your market niche or business by searching Google News with some targeted keywords to your business.

  • Get yourself actively involved in social media sites.

Facebook and Twitter are great sites for spreading news stories about your business.

You can spend money on online press releases or DIY using the above tips as a guideline.
